Olympic Torch Honour for Morag Day and Hamish Wilson

We were proud and excited that one of our club members and a member of staff had the incredible honour of carrying the Olympic Torch in July. Read their inspiring nomination stories below...

Our member of Staff, Hamish Wilson carried the torch through Dorchester on Thursday 12th July.

Hamish Wilson, a member of the Branksome Chine Surf Life Saving Club is 18 and from Bournemouth. He has been a dedicated SLSC Club member for the last 10 years and qualified as a beach lifeguard three years ago. Since then he has helped to patrol the beach around Branksome on a voluntary basis.

His selection as a torchbearer recognises his commitment to the younger club members: - he helps train 8 to 13 year old “Nippers” at Branksome Chine Beach on summer evenings and at Rossmore swimming pool during the winter.

At last summer’s British Life Saving Sport Championships in Cornwall, Hamish managed a team of 19 Nippers from Branksome. As well as being a great motivator to the team, he has provided inspiration through his own performances. He won gold and silver medals in his own category for the third year running - a gold for the beach sprint and a silver for the 1km race.

Hamish attends Bournemouth School where he is Deputy Head Boy and is preparing for his final A Level exams. He is involved in a number of sports, including rugby; in which he plays on the wing for both his school and for the Bournemouth RFC Colts team. As an athlete he has previously represented Dorset and he has also recently completed his first triathlon.

These achievements are all the more remarkable as Hamish had to work extra hard to regain fitness, following surgery for a serious shoulder injury.

Speaking about his selection as a torch bearer, Hamish said, “I am honoured and excited to have been chosen to carry the Olympic Torch. I really enjoy being a member of the Branksome Chine Surf Life Saving Club and being able to train and help the junior members. I can’t wait for the day to arrive and be part of the Olympics here in Dorset. Hopefully it will help to inspire some of the Nippers to achieve their best and highlight the contribution our club makes to the local community.”

The Branksome Chine SLSC promotes life saving and beach safety, with its members regularly competing in local and national surf life saving sports events. The Club is a registered charity and has junior (nipper), youth and adult members, many of whom are qualified beach life guards. Club members regularly provide safety cover for a variety of water events taking place in Bournemouth and Poole Bay. The Club is affiliated to Surf Life Saving GB.

West Hants Club Member, Morag Day carried the torch through Bournemouth on Friday 13th July.

Morag Day is an inspiration. She is a nurse, mother, run five marathons, survived cancer and three bone marrow transplants.

“Having had my life on hold for seven years while I survived Non Hodgkin Lymphoma and some rather debilitating side effects following a bone marrow transplant my passion is for life.

Through my membership of Wimborne Athletic Club and West Hants Tennis Club I keep myself active and fit and am a regular fundraiser for Lymphoma Association. I have raised several thousands of pounds for this charity through marathon running, walking, cake and plant sales coffee mornings and making and selling Christmas cards. If I was fortunate enough to carry the Olympic Torch I know I would further inspire the many people who have supported me throughout my illness and who have enjoyed my amazing return to a happy, healthy, active, and fit lifestyle.”

Double National Success for West Hants teams!

Last weekend, our Under 14 and Under 16 Girls Teams won the Premier National titles for the 2012 Team Tennis Event.

This is a fantastic achievement and it was great to be part of the success and celebrations when we clinched both age group titles.

The Under 14 team (pictured right) playing in the finals were Elle Baker, Selina Briggs, Jodie Burrage, Ema lazic and Eliz Maloney. They beat Swansea academy on Saturday in the semi finals 6 – 0 and then beat Heaton Club from Yorkshire in the final 4 – 1 with one doubles unfinished although we were leading 4-1 when the match was won.

The Under 16 team was Anna Battersby, Hannah Gamage, Sophia Haine, Molly Worden and Natalie Sayer. They beat Edgbaston Priory in the semi final on the Saturday winning all 4 singles and then in a nail biting match yesterday managed to beat the top seeds Bromley 4-2. After the singles matches the match was tied at 2 all, but West Hants won both doubles to clinch the National title and bring home the double.

This is a fantastic achievement and was sweet revenge for losing both National finals last year on a tie break shoot out. Rob Booth captained the Under 16 girls team and Mark Reid was the captain for the Under 14 team.

Additional Team Results

In addition to this it should be mentioned that Jodie Burrage won both the singles and doubles at the Tennis Europe event at Edgbaston, Birmingham last week – her first victory at such a level which was again a fantastic achievement.

Harry Butler won the Under 12 event at the Tennis Europe event in Solihull last week which was Harry’s first success again at this level so making some great progress and thoroughly deserved.

Millie Smythe won her first ever Under 12 grade 3 title at Winchester so congratulations to her.

Sophia Haine lost in the Under 18 final at Winchester and Hannah Gamage reached both the Under 16 and Under 18 finals so well done to them both.

Finally, just to let you know that Harry Butler and Eliz Maloney have been selected for the Under 12 Great Britain Summer Cup team. They are in a team of 3 players and Harry travels to Turkey and Eliz to Holland to play for GB this week. An outstanding achievement to them both and we wish them well.

As you can see a lot of great successes being achieved on the court and an outstanding weekend for West Hants tennis. Thanks to you all for all your efforts.

Mark Reid, Director of Tennis at The West Hants Club
