Tennis Times

We are running a “Try Tennis” promotion during Wimbledon fortnight, offering non-members and existing fitness-only members coaching sessions designed for complete beginners. An experienced tennis coach will guide you in key techniques that will introduce you to this very British sport!

Hour long sessions will run on Monday and Wednesday evenings and Sunday afternoons during the promotional period - see timetable below.


Session timetable

Hourly sessions available three days a week during the promotional fortnight:

Monday evening – on 25th June and 2nd July

6.30pm-7.30pm – Session 1

7.30pm-8.30pm – Session 2



Wednesday evening – on 27th June and 4th July

6.30pm-7.30pm – Session 1

7.30pm-8.30pm – Session 2



Sunday afternoon – on 1st July and 8th July

2.30pm-3.30pm – Session 1

3.30pm-4.30pm – Session 2



Cost is &4 per person, per session to be paid in advance via reception. Alternatively, you are welcome to pay on the day subject to availability. There is a maximum of 4 adults per session.

Please note that in the event of rain, your session will be rescheduled or a refund offered.

British Clay Championships

Matt Coombes Head Coach/Manager of the Bournemouth Gardens Tennis Centre and West Hants Club member has won the Over 45 British Open Clay Court Championships which was held at the West Hants Club from 2nd - 9th June 2012.

This is the Veterans LTA most prestigious tournament of the year, which is why it is classed as a Grade 1 event. This means if offers the most world ranking points for an event, thus attracting players from all over the world, some of this years winners were from Australia, Germany, Ireland and France. The players Matt beat on the way to the title are as follows:

64 BYE

32 vs SHARMA, Rajesh (GBR) 6-2 6-0

16 vs BLISSETT, David (GBR) 6-2 6-0

QF vs TORRE, Paul (FRA) 6-3 2-0 RET

SF vs CLARKE, Chris (GBR) 6-3 0-6 11-9

FR vs KNAPP, Ben (GBR) 6-4 6-3

The ranking points that he won from this event have taken his British Over 45 ranking to No 1 and his ITF World Over 45 ranking to No 3.

Matt regularly represents the West Hants Club in Inter Club matches and he will next be competing in the Aegon Team Tennis National finals held at the West Hants Club from Friday 13th – Sunday 15th July 2012. The next veterans event he will be competing in is the GB Grass Court Championships, this is normally held at Wimbledon, but due to the Olympics this will be held in Oxford from Mon 6th - 11th August 2012.

Congratulations should also go to fellow West Hants member Pauline Fisher, who narrowly lost the final of the Ladies Over 60 final to Majory Love 3-6, 6-2, 7-6. Having come back from 5-1 down in the final set and saving numerous matchpoints, before losing a very close final set tie-break.

A huge congratulations to Pauline and Matt on their fantastic achievements!
